Bedding - pillows and duvets

Some charities such as the Oxfordshire Animal Sanctuary accept duvets to be reused as bedding for the animals.

Duvets cannot be recycled so should be placed in the general waste container if taken to a Redbridge Waste Recycling Centre.

Sheets and duvet covers can be taken to a bring bank or Redbridge Waste Recycling Centre for recycling.

Bicycles

Bicycles in a good condition can be taken to Redbridge Waste Recycling Centre where Emmaus will collect them for refurbishment. Other bikes can be placed in the scrap metal containers for recycling.

 

You can also donate your old bike to Broken Spoke or Bicester Green, or offer it on Oxford Freegle.

Coffee machine pods

Put into your blue bin, sack or box. Plastic coffee pods used in various household machines can be recycled once rinsed.

Both plastic and cardboard egg boxes can be recycled in the blue bin, sack or box.

Electrical equipment e.g. heaters, clocks, watches, games consoles, hairdryers, irons, microwaves, toasters, radios, vacuum cleaners, shaving equipment, stereos, smoke alarms and CD/DVD players

Small electrical items that can fit into a standard sized carrier bag (e.g. lamps, telephones, electric toothbrushes, hair dryers, DVD players, games consoles, toasters, kettles and irons etc.) can be recycled if placed in a bag on top of your blue or green bin lid on collection day. Some bring bank sites also accept small electrical items for recycling

Fire extinguishers

Old fire extinguishers can be returned to the retailer or supplier. Please note that extensively corroded extinguishers cannot be accepted.

Please do not place fire extinguishers in your dustbin or in the containers at Redbridge Waste Recycling Centre as they may explode if they are crushed. Staff at Redbridge will show you to the area where they can be stored safely before being reused. Please make sure that:

  • All empty extinguishers have the handles securely taped together
  • Full/part full extinguishers have safety pin in place
  • Carbon Dioxide extinguishers should have a blanking cap if a swivel horn is not attached

You can also visit the Recolight website to search for your nearest collection point for low energy light bulbs.

You can donate unwanted goods to charity shops who always need good quality used goods; particularly clothes, CDs and books. You can also donate furniture - including sofas and upholstered chairs (which must comply with Flammability Regulations) - wardrobes, tables, chairs, book cases and coffee tables etc.

You might not need your old sofa or wheelbarrow any more but there might be someone just round the corner who does. Don't throw it away - give it away. Freegle groups make this happen online. Sign up, post an offer of something you want to get rid of, or a wanted for something you need.
