It is your responsibility to maintain your home and repair various items as listed in the Tenants' Repairs Handbook.
We have a Repairs Exemption Policy to provide help for Council tenants who are unable to maintain their home, and assist them with certain repairs.
Who is eligible?
To qualify to become exempt, the Tenant of your home (those named on your Tenancy Agreement or rent statement), has to be:
- 65 years old or over
- In receipt of Disability Living Allowance.
Which repairs are covered by the Exemption Policy?
- Decorating
- Internal carpentry (excluding bath panels)
- Wall Tiling
What does exemption mean?
If you qualify, it means that if you need to repair the decoration, wall tiling, or internal carpentry of your home, you can ask for help. You just need to report the repairs to us.
How to become exempt
To apply to become exempt you can fill in our online application form or download an application form (PDF) and send it back to us including your proof of age or Disability Living Allowance if necessary.

You can also request an Exemption Application Form from us using the contact details in the Contact Us menu at the top of the page.
What happens next?
Once we have assessed your application we will write to you stating if you have been successful or not.
If your application is successful, you will be exempt from the tenant's repairs responsibilities listed above and can order these repairs in the normal way.
If you are not exempt you will continue to have these repair responsibilities.
