The historic core of Oxford, defined as the extent of the post-medieval town before its rapid expansion in the 19th century, has been subject to a characterisation study.

This used digital maps to record information about building types, land-use and plot form.

Using this information the historic core was divided into thirteen broad zones and forty-four separate 'character areas'.

Short summary reports for each area have been produced to provide a short introduction to the heritage interest of each area. 

These short statements are intended to help members of the public, developers and planners gain rapid access to information about Oxford's rich and complex built and below ground heritage.
