Waste is additional recycling or rubbish put out next to or on top of your bins. This guide describes how to dispose of or recycle extra waste properly.
Extra waste we collect
When put out properly these are the recycling items we collect on bin day:
- additional recycling that's in a clear bag and placed next to your blue bin or clear sacks - see what goes in the blue recycling bin
- batteries - see our guide for recycling batteries
- small electrical items - see our guide for recycling electrical items
- coffee pods - learn about Podback coffee pod recycling
Extra waste we don't collect
Our teams don't collect extra general household waste in the kerbside collection rounds. This is because general waste usually hasn't been fully sorted for recycling, it would take crews longer to load and it costs more. The extra waste we won't collect includes:
- any extra household waste that is left by the side or on top of your green wheelie bin
- larger items such as fridges, furniture or washing machines, please book a bulky waste collection for these items
What happens if you leave out extra rubbish
Leaving rubbish out is unsightly and can damage the local environment. If you regularly put out extra rubbish the action we may take includes:
- serving a Fixed Penalty Notice of £60 (reduced to £40 if paid in 10 days)
- issuing a legal notice to clear any extra waste which is judged to be harmful to public health or the look of the area
If your household generates excess waste regularly please contact us to discuss your needs as you may be able to request a larger or additional bin. See New bin requests to learn more.
If you live in a flat or House of Multiple Occupancy (HMO) it is your landlord's responsibility to provide appropriate waste facilities. Please ask your landlord to contact us for more information.
