Overview
The scheme will provide a new path through Donnington Playing Fields to connect Meadow Lane with Cavell Road.
The path will enter the park through a new access on Meadow Lane to the west of the playing field and cross the field in parallel to the southern boundary to meet Cavell Road. The current entrance from Meadow Lane in the north west of the park will be retained for pedestrians only, and a kissing gate or similar feature will be provided.
Before work starts on site, additional details on the project were submitted to the Council for approval as the planning authority. This included updates on and off-site landscape schemes, detailed planting schedules, glow marker lighting along the cycle path.
A request for pre-application advice has previously been made ,and comments from consultees - including the Council’s Planning, Arboricultural and Ecology officers - were received and taken into consideration at the planning decision. A small number of trees will be removed to allow the path to connect to Meadow Lane. Replacement trees will be provided nearby to compensate for this.
Benefits include:
- Provision of a dedicated route for pedestrians and cyclists through the park.
- A more comfortable route to cross the park, providing a suitable surface for all weather use.
- Ties in with local signed cycle routes
- Encourages greater use of the playing fields and promotes active travel.
- The existing informal route diagonally across the park used by pedestrians and cyclists could be repaired allowing for reconfiguration of the pitches to better use space for all park users.
- Designating the path officially as a cycletrack, complying with local byelaws currently prohibiting cycling in the park.
