A full council tax bill is based on at least 2 adults living in a home. Spouses and partners who live together are jointly responsible for the bill.

Some people with specific circumstances may not appear on the Council Tax bill and may qualify for a Council Tax discount. Such as:

  • children under 18
  • children over 18 still eligible for child benefit
  • 18 and 19-year-olds in full-time education
  • student midwives and student health visitors
  • full-time college and university students
  • foreign language assistants registered with the British Council
  • persons with serious dementia, learning difficulties, brain injury etc.
  • live-in carers who look after someone who isn't their partner, spouse, or child
  • diplomats

How much discount will you get

The discount depends on who, in your home, is affected. You'll get:

  • 25% discount if everyone has qualifying circumstances, excluding you
  • 50% discount if everyone has qualifying circumstances, including you

How to apply

Use our online form if you believe a discount applies to you.

You'll need your Council Tax account number to complete this form. Find this at the top-right of your Council Tax bill, it is 9-digits long and starts with a 6.
