Council Tax Discretionary Discount is a reduction in Council Tax payments in cases of financial hardship.

For more information about this reduction such as the criteria and how applications are assessed, see Council Tax Discretionary Discount Procedure.

How to apply

If you believe you qualify for a Discretionary Discount you must apply in writing, either:

  • by email to counciltax@oxford.gov.uk
  • by post to the Council Tax team, Oxford City Council, PO Box 10, Oxford, OX1 1EN

Please include:

  • details of your circumstances and why you believe you qualify (this will help us to understand your situation)
  • your Council Tax account reference number (find this at the top-right of your Council Tax bill, it is 9-digits long and starts with a 6)

What happens next

Once we have received your application:

  • we assess your application and decide if a reduction is warranted
  • we'll notify you in writing of a decision within 28 days
  • if granted, the reduction will be credited to your Council Tax account
  • if you disagree with our decision you may request a review - read more about this in the Council Tax Discretionary Discount Procedure

If your situation changes

A change in circumstances could affect the reduction awarded. It is important to write and tell us about a change as soon as possible.

Our Council Tax Discretionary Discount Procedure describes how we'll recover any Discretionary Discount that is overpaid.
