Magdalen Quarry - Countryside and nature reserves

Nestled in the middle of Headington and close to Recreation Grounds at Margaret Road and Quarry Hollow, Magdalen Quarry is a wonderful example of Oxford's Jurassic history and geology.

The 0.4ha site is accredited with SSSI status for the quarry face and LNR for the biodiversity.

Access is by foot or cycle from Gladstone Road and William Kimber Crescent. Turn left before No.38 and the quarry is just behind the house.  

This quarry was the last to be worked in Headington and has provided an insight into the geology going back to Upper Jurassic time. 
During this time Oxford and the surrounding areas were covered by sea water, and indications show the presence of a coral reef nearby.Evidence of this can be found at the exposed coral reef at Rock Edge LNR, also in Headington.
