Chilswell Valley - Countryside and nature reserves

Chilswell Valley (6.3ha) in South Hinksey has been known as ‘Happy Valley’ for at least 100 yearsbecause of its popularity as a place for people to enjoy their natural heritage;Good Friday was traditionally the Happy Valley picnic day early in the 20th century.

Many local people in Kennington and South Hinksey are still passionate about this hidden gem and care deeply about its wildlife.

Access to Chilswell Valley is along the Chilswell Path, South Hinksey OX1 5AP. 

Walking

Taking a walk to Chilswell Valley will reward you with discoveries of one of Oxford's hidden gems. A boardwalk provides easy access for a picnic too.

A stream flows the whole length of the valley and supports the reedbeds.

The rare, acid grassland is maintained by cattle grazing and benefits the rare orchids and wildflowers. 

Take a look at the interpretation boards on site to show you what you can expect to see throughout the year. 

Chilswell Valley is one of three locations across Oxford that is being improved through the Wild Oxford Project.

The Wild Oxford Project - a partnership with BBOWT and Oxford City Council - is working to protect and reinstate rare fenland and to improve access and understanding of these rare habitats and their residents.
