What is it?

  • a building or group of buildings

Why is it interesting?

  • Historic interest – a well documented association with a person, event, episode of history, or local industry
  • Architectural interest – an example of an architectural style, a building of particular use, a technique of building, or use of materials

The oldest parts of the existing school building, facing London Road, were built in 1894, after the school-leaving age was raised to 11 in 1893, at a time when Headington was starting to rapidly grow.

The front of the school is a good example of a late Victorian school building, originally with separate boys and girls parts. These buildings replaced an earlier school building built in 1847 after the land was donated to the vicar of Headington on condition that it was used for ever as the site for a Church of England school.

Why is it locally valued?

  • Association: It connects us to people and events that shaped the identity or character of the area
  • Communal: It is important to the identity, cohesion, spiritual life or memory of all or part of the community

The existing school has continuously served as a primary school to Headington since 1894, with 30 new pupils per year, and so around 4,000 children have received their primary school education at the school over the years. It continues to have an important presence in the local community, with a strong link to the parish church of St Andrew’s in Old Headington too.

What makes its local significance special?

  • Age
  • Oxford’s identity

As they are close to the centre of Headington on the main London Road and opposite the entrance to Bury Knowle Park, the school buildings are a familiar landmark in Headington. It continues to thrive as a primary school for Headington and so is an important educational and cultural asset for a school roll of 210 children and their parents/carers, plus the staff.
