Risks and registration of cooling towers

Cooling towers and evaporative condensers are linked to legionella outbreaks. To mitigate this risk, regulations require all premises with these systems to notify local authorities using an approved form.

This notification helps identify potential risks and enables easier monitoring and inspection by enforcing authorities.

While local authorities maintain records of these systems, enforcement of standards is a joint effort between the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) and local authorities. This depends on the main activity at the premises.

Operators should note that both the local authority and HSE will conduct visits to ensure compliance and take enforcement action if needed.
