Oxford Lord Mayor, Councillor Lubna Arshad, to be recognised for her achievements and contributions towards the community at this year’s SHE Awards.

The SHE (Saluting, Honouring, Excellence) awards take place annually on International Women’s Day (8 March) to recognise and celebrate the achievements of women from all walks of life. Councillor Arshad’s award recognises her dedicated work within the community.

Councillor Arshad is known for ambitious initiatives to close the gender pay gap and protect religious freedom. She is also particularly passionate about supporting young people and eradicating poverty internationally.

Her dedication to humanitarian projects and pursuit of justice resonates strongly; she serves as an aspiring role model for fearless change, ensuring that all voices are heard. She believes in love for all, hatred for none.

Councillor Arshad was born and raised in Oxford. She achieved a BSC(Hons) in Computer Network Technologies from Manchester and has over 20 years of experience in the IT industry.

Her passion for equality and fairness led her to election as a City Councillor in 2018, representing Cowley Marsh initially, and later, due to electoral boundary changes, serving Temple Cowley.

Councillor Lubna Arshad has made history as the first woman of colour, first Muslim woman of intersectional background, and the youngest Lord Mayor representing the city.

Her achievement is groundbreaking and represents significant progress towards diversity, inclusivity, and representation in leadership roles.

Councillor Arshad will attend the SHE awards ceremony with Iram Woolley. Iram serves as a school governor, advocates for women's rights, and champions equal representation. She empowers women through training for diverse leadership, inclusive opportunities, and comprehensive policies. She advocates for paid parental leave, affirming every woman's rights to be heard, supported, informed, and empowered to communicate through collective bargaining and representation.
