Oxford City Council is celebrating the pedestrian-friendly improvements to Market Street with free activities on 25 July, starting at midday.  

Residents will be welcomed by Oxford Lord Mayor, Councillor Mike Rowley, before enjoying a mix of family-friendly activities during the afternoon and live music in the evening. 

From midday to 3pm, activities will include: 

  • two 35-minute immersive performances by WhatNot Theatre 
  • dragon arts and crafts with The Story Museum  
  • virtual trip to space with The Space Store  
  • arts and crafts with Museum of Oxford  
  • balloon modelling and stilt walking. 

During the 5 – 8pm timeslot, residents will be able to relax and enjoy roaming jazz duo, Fifi La Mer, regulars at the legendary Upstairs at Ronnie Scotts.  

Market Street will be closed to all traffic from 10am – 4pm. From 4pm to 8pm, it will reopen for loading. 

The Council has prepared a back-up plan in case of adverse weather conditions.  

Market Street pedestrian-friendly trial  

The Market Street Party will officially launch the trial of pedestrian-friendly improvements to the street which were completed in late spring.   

The trial will last 18 months during which time it will be monitored and kept under review. A consultation is currently open on Oxfordshire County Council’s website, and feedback is invited from the public and stakeholders.
