Tree planting is a widely recognised way of combatting climate change but planting the right tree in the right place is crucial. The Council’s Urban Forest Strategy shows the Council’s commitment to “protect, manage, grow and expand our urban forest to help tackle the climate and ecological emergencies that we face”.
Trees have a much better chance of surviving and thriving if they are planted between October and April, ideally between November and March – this is commonly known as the tree-planting season.
Oxfordshire County Council will also be planting 109 street trees in areas of Oxford. These will be a combination of new and replacement tree planting. They have delivered letters to share these plans with residents in close proximity to a proposed planting location. The map of Oxfordshire County Council’s planting sites can be viewed here.
All the trees will have a watering and aftercare programme for three years to help the trees establish.
Get involved
Residents are encouraged to get involved in tree planting, with the Climate Action Oxfordshire website providing information about how to become a tree guardian.
Resident’s can also sign up to the Council’s newsletter mini-series on the topic of tree planting, entitled ‘Treemails’. The weekly mini-series, aims to act as an introduction to tree planting for people wanting to learn more during the tree planting season.
Comment
"I am super pleased we’re planting over 150 trees across Oxford this winter. It’s a fantastic step in supporting biodiversity and enhancing our city’s green spaces. Each new tree brings benefits for wildlife, improves air quality & public space and helps tackle the climate crisis. They are helping us to grow Oxford’s urban forest for future generations to enjoy.”
