Oxford City Council, working with ODS, has started much-needed surface enhancements to the pedestrianised section of St Michael’s Street in the city centre.

The surface improvement works will upgrade accessibility and enhance the popular outdoor dining space which was originally created during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The work is expected to finish by the end of March, in time for better weather during the Spring and Summer.

Businesses along St Michael’s Street will remain open throughout the construction period, and every effort is being made to minimise disruption however, outdoor seating in the pedestrianised section will be suspended during the works. Alternative outdoor seating is still available on Market Street or Broad Street.

The City Council project received £377,000 from the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.  It has been supported by the Highways Authority, Oxfordshire County Council, and it is being delivered by ODS Highways team, with design by LDA Design.

Enhancing St Michael’s Street for all

The improvements aim to create a fully accessible, pedestrian-focused street that respects the heritage and character of this historic city location. Works include:

  • Pavement and road surface made flush with each other, creating a level surface and improving accessibility
  • seating areas marked with small surface studs, for permanent clarity
  • new drainage connecting to existing rainwater pipes
  • scope for new planters with seating
  • cycle parking will be retained and divided into smaller areas.

The scheme design reflects the Council’s commitment to more accessible public spaces and has been developed in consultation with disability groups and other stakeholders.

The project builds on the success of St Michael’s Street’s temporary pedestrianisation in 2020 and its eastern section’s permanent closure to vehicles in January 2022, which has transformed this part of the street into a vibrant civic space, supporting hospitality businesses and providing outdoor socialising opportunities for residents and visitors.
