Work has started to install 70 new cycle racks in Oxford – providing 140 additional cycle parking spaces for cyclists across the city.

The work, which is being carried out by Oxford Direct Services (ODS) on behalf of Oxford City Council, will see the installation of 70 new cycle racks across the city. The City Council also worked in partnership with Oxfordshire County Council on the locations of the cycle racks.

The cycle racks, which will be Sheffield-style hoops, will be installed in the following locations:

  • Broad Street: 5 cycle racks (10 spaces)
  • Ship Street: 6 cycle racks (12 spaces)
  • Queen’s Lane: 21 cycle racks (14 upgrades plus 7 additional racks) (42 spaces)
  • South Parade: 12 cycle racks (24 spaces)
  • Brasenose Lane: 16 cycle racks (32 spaces)
  • Leopold Street: 7 cycle racks (14 spaces)
  • Observatory Street: 3 cycle racks (6 spaces)

According to the latest data from Department for Transport, 35% of people in Oxford cycle at least once a week – which is one of the highest levels across England. But the result of this is that it is often difficult to find a spot to park your bicycle securely.

The cycle racks are being installed as part of the City and County Council’s work to encourage and support cycling within Oxford.

The installation of the new cycle racks started in December and is expected to be completed by the end of January 2025.

Funding for the new cycle racks has been allocated to Oxford City Council from the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), which is the contributions required from developers when planning permission for new buildings is given. This fund has a dedicated cycle infrastructure pot which is running until 2026.

Residents can request locations to be considered for new cycle racks by submitting a bicycle rack report on the FixMyStreet website.

Comment

"I am delighted that we are creating 140 new cycle parking spaces. Oxford is a hub for cycling, but with so many people using their bikes every day to come in to the city centre there are often bikes attached to all sorts of inappropriate things like railings and drainpipes. To encourage more people to cycle, with all the health benefits that brings, it is important that we increase the provision of bicycle parking across the city.

"We often hear from existing and potential cyclists that it is really difficult to find places to lock bikes securely. I am looking forward to using these new racks myself, and to seeing other people using the new racks throughout the city. If anyone has ideas of where new cycle racks are needed, please do share your suggestions.”
