A tour of the city like never before, presented through augmented reality.

Oxford City Council is hosting a free augmented reality trail around Oxford city centre to encourage families to visit in the run-up to Christmas.

Families will be able to scan QR codes using a smartphone in 10 shop, museum and pub windows across the city centre.

By scanning the QR codes, you will be able to read or listen to children’s stories, watch a video from the community and see an augmented reality character come to life in front of you.

Each stop will also provide families with information about the history of the people of Oxford.

The trail, which launches on Saturday 28 October, will feature at the following locations:

  • Museum of Oxford
  • Covered Market
  • Yellow Submarine Café, in Park End Street
  • The Story Museum
  • Art Café, in Bonn Square
  • The Covered Market
  • Jolly Farmers, in Paradise Street
  • Restore Garden Café, in Manzil Way
  • Blackwell's Bookshop, in Broad Street
  • Worcester Street Car Park

The City Council created the trail with city centre businesses and community organisations. The list of locations was decided following an open call for potential locations.

The event aims to increase footfall in the city centre, as well as showcasing the diversity of Oxford and the diversity of organisations and groups in Oxford city centre.

For more information and to take part, visit the Trails of the City webpage.

“I hope that local families enjoy this  free activity to entertain children in the city centre this Christmas. It combines gaming, a favourite activity for a lot of young children, with a chance to get out and about in the fresh air.”

Councilor Susan Brown, Leader of Oxford City Council
