"Earlier this week, I issued a statement condemning the barbaric and appalling terrorism of Hamas on Israeli civilians, and explaining that Oxford City Council had lowered the City's Flag as a mark of respect and solidarity.

"As the world stands on a precipice ahead of this weekend, we recognise both that Israel has the right to defend itself and rescue hostages, and that it must do so within international law. Violence against civilians is unacceptable and there must be humanitarian access for Gaza to food, water, medicine and electricity.

"Both Israelis and Palestinians are suffering terribly because of Hamas’s actions, which have set back the cause of peace potentially for many years. We must not allow Hamas to be conflated with the Palestinian people.

"Our thoughts are with all those suffering from these terrible events and those in our city worrying about friends and family. Oxford has a strong tradition of compassion and tolerance, and we will continue to work with community and multi-faith groups across the city to provide support to all those affected."

Councillor Susan Brown, Leader of Oxford City Council
