This Christmas, take window shopping in the city centre to a new height with the City Council’s Christmas display competition.

Businesses in the city centre will compete to impress shoppers with a stunning Christmas window to be in with a chance to win a stack of ‘winderful’ prizes, including a gift from The Randolph Hotel and a framed certificate presented by the Mayor in the New Year. The winner will also be showcased on the Council’s social media channels.

The competition runs from Thursday 17 November until Christmas Eve and the winner will be judged by members of the public voting on social media and by a team of judges visiting the displays and awarding points for different elements.

The judges will award bonus points for:

  • Use of reusable and recycled materials
  • An Oxford-related theme, e.g., history, academia or something Oxford-inspired, i.e., films or books
  • Evidence of a Christmas Act of Kindness for Everyone (CAKE), e.g., a donation station, links with a charity, hospital or other care facility
  • Evidence of the theme running throughout the store, e.g., choice of music, staff costumes, etc.

“Traders have had a really tough time over the past few years, particularly during the run-up to Christmas. We’re hoping this year to see more people visiting the city centre than ever before and hope as many businesses as possible take part in our free-to-enter competition.

“Oxford’s businesses have always been supportive of a good cause and we need their help to make the city centre a fun, welcoming and positive place to visit during this festive season.

“We can all appreciate the fun of coming in to town at Christmas to window shop and maybe decide what we’d like to find under the tree, if we’ve been good! This is a chance for traders to recreate the magic of past traditions as well as showcase their business to customers, new and old”.
