Pigeon behaviour
Feral pigeons, descended from rock, dovecote, and domestic pigeons, are common in town centres. They rely on the public for food, feeding on scraps and birdseed, leading to pest issues like fouling buildings and spreading diseases.
Why pigeon control is significant
Pigeon droppings can damage buildings and monuments, erode stonework, and attract mites and insects. Pigeons can spread diseases like Chlamydosis, Cryptococcosis, Salmonellosis, and Histoplasmosis. They can also cause blocked gutters and downspouts, leading to water damage and increased maintenance costs. Roosting pigeons create odour, noise, and slipping hazards.
Pigeon life cycle
Females typically lay two eggs per clutch, but feral pigeons can lay up to six clutches per year, adapting well to their environments.
Controlling pigeons
Reducing food sources is key to lowering pigeon numbers. Only feed birds within your yard or garden, and don't leave food out for long to avoid attracting rodents. Scattering food on roads and pavements can lead to enforcement action under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
