This page provides information for landlords, managing agents and housing associations who are responsible for shared bins at communal buildings.
Waste collection arrangements should be regularly audited to make sure they are fit for purpose.
If you're a resident of the building, see Using shared bins.
Access to shared bins
Bins and bin stores need to be clearly accessible at all times for collections to be made. Examples of obstructions include:
- vehicles blocking access routes
- excess rubbish impeding entry or exit
- changed access codes or new barriers - you must email us with changes to entry requirements in advance of collection
Collections for new communal developments
Before collections can commence, new communal developments require assessment by an officer to determine:
- you have enough bins
- you have an equal (or greater) number of blue recycling bins compared to green rubbish bins
- bins meet required specifications
Shared bins can be purchased from us or a third party. If buying from another supplier you must ensure they are built to the required specifications:
- wheeled bins must meet specification EN 840 parts 2, 5 and 6
- green for rubbish
- blue for mixed recycling
- red for communal food recycling
If you purchase from a third-party, let us know when the bins arrive so we can update our waste management system.
Arrange a site assessment
To arrange a site assessment send an email to the recycling and waste team.
Also get in touch to discuss bin specifications, numbers and to discuss educational materials or visits for residents.
