When paying Council Tax, different rules apply depending on the mix of students and other adults living in a property.

Properties occupied only by full-time students

Properties only occupied by full-time students are exempt from Council Tax. All residents must confirm their student status to us for this exemption to be applied to your Council Tax account.

Properties with one full-time student and one other adult

If a student is living with one non-student, the student will be disregarded and the non students bill can be reduced by 25%.  The student must apply for this disregard.

International Students who live with dependents who have come to the UK with a Tier 4 dependent visa are also exempted from paying Council Tax. Please include the dependent's date of birth and their Home Office visa link when applying for your student exemption.

Properties with one or more full-time students and two or more other adults

If two or more non-students live in a property, there is no Council Tax discount or exemption available. The non-students will be named on the Council Tax bill.

Halls of Residence

Purpose bulit halls of residence, owned by the university or college for occupation by their students are exempt from Council Tax. The university or college will apply for the exemption on these directly.

Student accommodation not run by a university are not counted as halls of residence and you will need to apply for your own student exemption for your room.
